Are these docs, lawyers, editors, journalists, army general and police officers enriching our politics? Debating with academicians & journalists.

On the panel:

1.Dr Akshay Kumar
Academician & Public Intellectual, Adamant on forever saying the most sensible

2.Hamir Singh
Sr Journalist & Activist, someone with a deep & holistic understanding of politics and countryside

3.Dr Karminder Singh Ghuman
Management Studies Expert, Thapar University, Punjab; understands when a managerial approach helps in politics but also when contentious issues become too intractable for an MBA style approach

4.Aarish Chhabra
Senior Journalist, Hindustan Times; connects with the young, understands global politics and covers civic issues; has diverse, eclectic interests

For years, the middle class stayed away from politics, considering it a dirty cess pool, but in reecnt times, politics, even its most rough and tumble avataar of electoral arena, has been attracting professionals from many fields. Punjab's upcoming no-holds-barred joust on February 4 is witnessing an Army general in the fray, a number of journalists, an editor, several doctors and lawyers, government employees, IAS officers - retired and the ones that just quit, and, how can you forget, comedians - from Bhagwant Mann to Gurpreeet Ghuggi-gone-Waraich.

These are the changing faces of politics. The professionals. But are these faces the ones who will enrich our politics? Or are these symptomatic of the poverty of our politics? Are political parties paying for their incapacity to throw up leaders and now having to depend upon these faces? Weren't politicians expected to be the result of a longtime association with public causes? Why haven't we seen people's movements throwing up leaders?

In the mid-1980s, it started with a professional pilot. Politics sucked him in, and made him a PM. He brought some other professionals - from Arun Nehru to Arun Singh to Sam Pitroda to Mani Shanker Aiyer. With the emergence of AAP, we saw another round of fresh faces. In Punjab, we saw a heart surgeon, an eye specialist, a curator of kirtan and music making a dint. And then, floodgates seemed to have opened. Overnight, professionals would jump at the possible sighting of a ticket, and become politicians ready to serve the public.

Is that the way to go? And why did we reach this stage?

Our experience with entertainers in politics has not been great. An odd Shabana Azmi aside, we have had our share of Hema Malini, Dharmendra, Govinda, Jaya Prada, Mithun Chakraborty, Jaya Bachhan, Vinod Khanna, Shatrugan Sinha, but did not find our Meryl Streep in any of these.
