Half the world is stuffed and half the world is starved. Half the world is suffering from health issues related to over-nutrition and half the world with issues related to under-nutrition.
In the midst of this global dysfunctional relationship with our food, we need to rethink that relationship. Are these two seemingly opposite problems (obesity and starvation) actually just two sides to the same coin? Are they related? Do they have one global solution?
I want to change the way people think about food and nutrition. Here’s how: I speak a lot and often joke that speaking for people like me who run non-profits is often just 20 minutes of making you feel badly. haha. Few of us are willing to invest 20 minutes in feeling badly, so we tune non-profits out. I think hunger has been branded and framed in the wrong way. Hunger is actually our friend. It starts as a gentle reminder that we need fuel.

Mark Moore is the co-founder of MANA Nutrition, one of the world’s leading suppliers of Ready to Use Therapeutic Food,(RUTF) the front line defense against severe acute malnutrition. Mark and his team raised $13 million in 2011 to build MANA’s 30,000 square foot production facility which now employs more than 60 people and supplies partners such as UNICEF, the World Food Program, World Vision, Doctors without Borders and USAID to aid in their efforts in fighting malnutrition in more than 50 countries across the globe. MANA has grown exponentially in the last five years, supplying over $20 million worth of RUTF in 2015 to the UN and US government. Mark was an Unreasonable Institute Fellow in Boulder, CO in 2013 where he and others launched Calorie Cloud, an effort to harvest excess calories in the US and send them into 500 calorie packets of RUTF. Calorie Cloud now partners with the US Fund for UNICEF to run UNICEF Kid Power, the first ever fit for good tech platform.
