Q: How to buy a Tesla Model 3?
A: You reserve a place in the queue by placing a $1,000 deposit. When it is time to configure, you put down another $2,500, then you pay the rest before taking delivery. That said, it will be a long wait, as Tesla has hundreds of thousands of preorders to get through first. For us, it took roughly 21 months.
Q: How much does the 2017 Tesla Model 3 cost?
A: Tesla is not yet building the $35,000 base vehicle with the standard battery. All 2017 Tesla Model 3 sedans have the long-range battery, so they start at $44,000. For the time being, the $5,000 Premium Upgrades package is a mandatory option, so the effective base price of the car is $49,000. This test vehicle was priced at $55,000 because it also has Autopilot ($5,000) and a metallic silver paint color ($1,000). Delivery and taxes are extra.
Q: Are Tesla Model 3s being delivered?
A: Yes, but at this point, only if you made a reservation in early 2016. Current Tesla owners are given priority, which is partly why we got ours so soon.
Q: Can you lease a Model 3?
A: Not yet. The Model 3 can only be purchased at this point. Other Teslas are available for lease, so we expect it to be offered in the future.
