Great Life Eight Treasure Spring/Summer Congee

According to Chinese medicine, the barley and mung beans have a cooling effect (even when cooked) to counteract the summer heat. The lotus seeds nourish the heart and calm the spirit, and strengthen the kidney and spleen. The black beans and gouqizi (goji) supplement the kidney and liver yin to counteract the depleting effects of summer heat. The jujubes (hongzao) and rice supplement the vital energy (qi).

Brown rice: 100g
Yi yi ren: 60g
Sunflower seed: 20g
Lotus seeds: 60g
Mung bean: 40g
Black bean: 40g uncooked, or 1/2 cup cooked
Chinese red date (jujube, hong zao): 10 pieces, pitted
Go ji berry: 30 g
Filtered water: 1.5 to 2 liters

Cooking instructions:

If boiling or using black turtle or black soy beans, soak beans and lotus seeds separately from other ingredients in half of the water. Soak the rest of the ingredients in the other half of the water.

In the morning, boil the beans for an hour , then add the other ingredients and boil for an hour.

If pressure cooking or using pre-cooked black beans, soak all ingredients (except pre-cooked beans) overnight. In the morning add any pre-cooked beans, then pressure-cook for one hour.

Add black sesame and black walnut powder before eating. One can add rock sugar or other sweetener to the taste.
