A senior engineer has said the lightning arrester that broke off the UNMO building in Penang during a devastating thunderstorm last week hit the ground with such force it likely buried one of its two victims deep underground, according to a report by the Star Online.

It is not clear how exactly the 38-metre structure tore from the building and crashed onto the busy road beneath.

The steel-reinforced concrete arrester fell directly onto the car of rice vendor Lim Chin Aik.

Lim Kok Khong said the impact on the driver's section of the car likely buried Lim's body approximately 13 storeys underground.

Work to recover the remains of the victim is currently on hold over fears it may destabilise the Umno building.
