This is the second of four Bomberman games released for the N64. Bomberman Hero gets a lot of flak for being one of the least traditional Bomberman games, but I think it's a welcome change and I'm glad they tried at least once. Hell, with the huge list of more "traditional" BM releases, I can live without 2D sprites and the inability to jump of my own free will for a change. This game is a repetitve platformer with simple level objectives, simple puzzles and simple fun.
Bomberman Hero has several new features. One of the most notable features is that he can jump and doesn't die in a single hit (he actually has life brackets). He also can use different gadgets on some levels so as to make things more varied, and several levels have more than one path to clear it. The graphics and sound are pretty good by N64 standards, and there's quite a bit to work towards like a perfect stage score (or higher on some stages), highest rank, and a few hidden unlockables. The one thing that sucks is that you lose your health expansion (earned when a player collects 200 gems) and weapon upgrades when you turn your game off, although the game DOES have built-in battery saves.
While I wouldn't say this game is better than BM64, BMH is a decent game in its own right, though a little on the easy side. This is a sample video going through a few levels and bosses, captured on original hardware through the "XRGB-mini Framemeister Compact UpScaler". Note that all sorts of tests will be done with the XRGB-mini as its results vary from system to system and game to game (beats the pants off the old quality though). Enjoy.
