A tour bus carrying 46 high school students and other passengers heading north to Humboldt State University for a tour crashed with a Fedex tractor trailer near the community of Orland, 95 miles north of Sacramento, California. At least 9, including the drivers, were killed in the accident, and 32 were injured.
The Fedex truck was heading south and lost control, then crossed over a grass median and slammed head-on into the bus which was on the opposite side of the freeway at about 5:40 p.m.
The truck driver tried to avoid a passenger car which was also involved in the crash before he smashed into the bus.
The collision caused an explosion and fire, leaving the bus reduced to a burnt-out metal hulk on the side of the road.
"There was one person when we arrived on scene that was on fire" said Officer Tracy Hoover from California Highway Patrol. All lanes of I-5 are shutdown and emergency crews have attended the scene.
