Time for another gift in a jar. As the holidays approach it is always fun to prepare homemade gifts. Sometimes we have friends with special dietary needs that we still want to give a little something too but this can be difficult if we don't know how to approach the recipe. Today we are going to make some dairy free hot cocoa mix. This has simple ingredients and one specialty item that I will link below. Coconut milk powder makes this mix super cream and delicious. Along with the non dairy creamer this cocoa is super rich and chocolaty and will make any hot cocoa lover very happy!

As with all of my hot drink mixes, this one is simple, put all the ingredients in a bowl or in your food processor and go. Mix well, and divide into jars or cones for gift giving. I made mine with demarrara sugar which has a bit of a coarser texture so you will want to stir this up very well when doing it by hand to make sure all the ingredients are well distributed. If you prefer a finer texture you can use your food processor. The benefit of using the processor is that not only will you get a very fine grind, but you will also get a very well incorporated mix, closer the commercial style of hot cocoa mix.

I have used an organic coconut milk powder that I got from Amazon. It was around $13.00 for a one pound package. I am also using my very favorite, ever, in the world, dark chocolate, Dutch processed cocoa powder from the Prepared Pantry. Hands down, the best cocoa powder I have ever used! I have linked both the coconut milk powder and the cocoa powder below if you want to check them out.

I have also designed a gift tag for you to print out and use for your own gift. Just print, cut and follow the directions for assembly. This is my gift to you this holiday season. Gift tags are so much fun when you have them already to go!

I have to say, I was really pleasantly surprised at the delicious, rich, and creamy result of this mix. It does not have a coconut flavor. Rick said he got a slight hint, but I did not. He tends to be a bit more of a high taster than me. I thought it might taste like a mounds bar but it did not. Just plain delicious cocoa!

This recipe will give you approximately 5, 1 cup jelly jars of mix or 2 pint jars plus one jelly jar of mix. I like the idea of using the pint jar, for this, especially if I am giving this to a family. It gives them a couple of nice evening treats and then its done. You can always attach the recipe in the gift bag so they can know how to make their own! Add in some fun homemade or store bought marshmallows and candy canes for a complete hot cocoa kit. Any family would enjoy receiving that as a holiday treat!

I hope you give this dairy free version of hot cocoa mix a try. Even if you are not dairy free or have no dairy allergies. I promise you will not be disappointed. If you try it or give it I hope you and your friends love it!

Happy Holidays and Happy Eating!
