Wow... the very first Dynasty Warriors... to think this game would spawn an arguably legendary series. Most people I know love Dynasty Warriors 2 and up, but a lot of people forgot that this game existed, including me. I bought it eons ago disc-only... I don't have the slightest idea where. I was going through one of my CD books though and thought, "Hey, this looks a little interesting. Let me put up a video for it."

Humble beginnings... hmmm... not bad. If you don't compare it to other 3D fighters of the time like Tekken, Virtua Fighter or Soul Blade, this game is respectable in its own right. The character models are good, the framerate is smooth, and the line-up is a good size. Characters don't have a lot of moves or depth, but they do possess actual parrying abilities and Musou attacks, some of which have hidden extensions and they all get upgraded when your life is low, which is good for an old 3D fighter. Getting beat in this game is pretty hard if you play with moderate offense and defense, but can be very easy too due to a less than favorable recovery system, where you can sometimes get trapped by the enemy and get floored everytime you try to stand. Of course, it works both ways.

I'm glad Dynasty Warriors has since gone on to greener pastures, but this game is nothing to be ashamed of. I think it's decent. A better Playstation Koei-published fighter IMO is the often-forgotten Destrega. Enjoy.
