Strength training can be a great way to help alleviate back pain, but only if you are careful! This workout avoids forward flexion of the spine, and instead focuses on postures that help keep the back in a more neutral position. If you find that traditional exercises (such as bent over rows, etc) aggravate your back, try substituting in any of these moves instead to see if they help.

Level: Beginner/Intermediate

Equipment: Resistance Band (recommended) or dumbbells

Intensity: Moderate

Please note: Not all exercises are suitable for everyone. If you are working with a specific back injury, be sure to get your doctor and/or physical therapist's approval before attempting this workout. If you suffer from back pain regularly, be sure to consult a professional for an expert diagnosis.

This workout features moves that help to develop muscular strength in the chest, arms, shoulders, back and core with exercises like:

Standing Back Row
Split Stance Forward Chest Press
Overhead Shoulder Press
Standing Biceps Curls
Upright Triceps Kickbacks
Full Plank Static Hold
