Our Intel B360 & H370 chipset review uses an MSI B360 Mortar motherboard to start with, providing a Coffee Lake chipset comparison for Z370 vs. B360 & H370. In this Intel chipset comparison, you'll see the gaming performance differences benchmarked for each motherboard with the 8th Generation CPUs, but we'll also look at 2666MHz vs. 3200MHz benchmarks for the i5-8400 CPU. This includes a recap of Blender benchmarks and previous gaming benchmarks that looked at if memory speed mattered for the i5-8400.
The B360 chipset and H370 chipset release dates have finally arrived, and these new options make far more sense for i5-8400 or non-K CPUs than the existing Z370 chipsets. There are cross-over use cases, but you'll have to determine those on a case-by-case basis. For a 6-core CPU without overclocking, and even when considering memory frequency and memory overclocking differences, the B360s and H370s make more sense as the best boards for the i5-8400, i5-8500, and i3-8300 or i3-8100 CPUs.
For this testing, we also worked with the ASUS Z370 Maximus X, Gigabyte Z370 Ultra Gaming, Gigabyte B360, and Gigabyte H370 motherboards. This answers a basic question: "Does chipset matter for gaming?"
