Legendary music producer Just Blaze recounts how Beyoncé called him with the secret project that became “Lemonade” and told him he was the “only person” who could produce the album; and when he first hooked up with Jay Z at the age of 22; and how the couple ultimately became like “family” to him. Just Blaze also talks about the importance of trust in the music industry, mentioning the NDAs he has signed and how, to this day, he is holding two albums worth of *unreleased* Jay Z material! Blaze also talks about some of his most iconic tracks, like P.S.A., and why he thinks producers are unique rappers when they step in the booth, citing Jermaine Dupri and Kanye West, (who Blaze famously collaborated with on the Grammy-nominated “Late Registration.”) This interview is an extended discussion with MSNBC anchor Ari Melber, which occurred after Just Blaze appeared on Melber’s news and culture TV show, “The Beat with Ari Melber.” The two also discuss whether Jay Z or Kanye ever made a dud album, why Memphis Bleek “passed” on so many great beats in the old days at Roc-A-Fella, and how Just Blaze came to work with such a diverse range of leading artists.
