On day #11 of my trip I traveled 328 miles driving from Cedar City, Utah to Ely, Nevada. The highlight of the day was Cathedral Gorge State Park which is located in a long, narrow valley in southeastern Nevada, where erosion has carved dramatic and unique patterns in the soft bentonite clay. The park’s beauty began with explosive volcanic activity that, with each eruption, deposited layers of ash hundreds of feet thick.
After leaving Cathedral Gorge I paid a visit to the nearby historic town of Pioche, population 1002.
Next it was a boring 120 mile drive across eastern Nevada before I arrived at Great Basin National Park. From the 13,063-foot summit of Wheeler Peak, to the sage-covered foothills, Great Basin National Park is a place to sample the stunning diversity of the larger Great Basin region.
My last stop of the day was in Ely where I visited the Nevada Northern Railway Museum and the White Pine County Courthouse before ending my day at the local La Quinta Inn.
