The general advice I've heard from doctors is that if your symptoms are from the neck up, it's OK to participate in light activity.
When in doubt, ask your doctor (and your body!).
Please don't go to the gym if you are sick though. Not only could you pick up additional bugs while your immune system is already taxed, you could be spreading yours around too which is never a good idea!
