US deploys kamikaze drones to clear mines near Iran

The US has deployed mine-hunting underwater drones as part of a military buildup in the Gulf region as tensions mount over Iran's nuclear program.

US officials say the deployment of a fleet of SeaFox submersible drones is part of an effort to reassure Israel and send a message Tehran, which has said it could close shipping in the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation against tightened Western-led sanctions over its nuclear program. One fifth of the world's oil is shipped through the Strait of Hormuz, which lies between Iran and Oman.

The four-foot-long, 88-pound SeaFox drones cost $100,000 each and were ordered from Germany in May. A reusable version of the SeaFox uses sonar and color CCTV to navigate and search for targets. A combat version detonates itself next to the mine, causing the mine to explode.
