Dr. Dilip Joseph, a medical adviser for the Morning Star Development, and two other Afghan staffers for the NGO organization were stopped and captured by Taliban insurgents on Wednesday afternoon as they were returning from a rural medical clinic in Afghanistan's eastern Kabul province, according to Reuters and NATO-led forces.
They were captured at around 3:30pm on Wednesday local time and taken to a mountainous area about 50 miles from the Pakistan border. The two staffers were released on Saturday after three days of "on-again, off-again" negotiations, as described by Morning Star Development. Approximately 11 hours after their release, a nighttime helicopter raid involving the US Navy SEAL Team Six and Afghan forces rescued Dr. Dilip Joseph, the remaining hostage. One member of the US special forces was killed in action.
At least six people were killed and two Taliban leaders arrested during the rescue mission.
