While most of us assume this is just a case of whichever taste you prefer, Russ explains that it actually impacts the effectiveness of your protein supplement, too. Milk slows down the digestion process considerably, going some way to defeat the overall point of trying to rush some whey into your system after a workout, whereas water helps it to feed your muscles a lot sooner.

Milk is a great choice for the rest of the day, particularly before bed, however in the 45 minute golden muscle building window after an intense workout you should definitely look to consume your post-workout protein shake in water.
